Death Cafe
What is a death cafe?

Death Café is a welcoming, informal gathering where people come together to talk openly about death and end-of-life topics. There’s no agenda or presentation - just thoughtful, respectful conversation in a supportive setting with some coffee, tea and cookies. It’s a space to share perspectives, ask questions, and explore a topic that touches us all but is often avoided.
The original concept for “Café Mortels” was created by Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz in 2004. Since then, Death Cafés have grown around the world. Today, there are more than 9,600 in-person and online Death Cafés in the U.S. including a monthly Death Café held evenings at Auburn Public Library.

Our Death Cafe will be led by John Painter.
John Painter was born and raised here in Maine. He lives in Lewiston with his wife Kati who teaches at Bates College, and their two rescued miniature schnauzers. John earned a BA in psychology from Evergreen State College in Washington, and an MS in psychiatric rehabilitation from Rutgers University in New Jersey. John has lived and worked in Germany, then Hungary for several years before retuning to the US, where he worked in senior management at an Augusta based community mental-health agency for over 20 years. Eight years ago, John decided to change careers to work in HUD low-income housing, specifically with senior citizens and people with disabilities.
